GOING CRAZY

We like to imagine that when somebody goes crazy, they break free from the clutches of the mundane world. In fact, usually the world that crazy people enter is just as mundane as the regular world.

I have a friend who's gone crazy periodically over the years of our friendship, and the last time it happened her break with reality was precipitated by the city's bid for the Olympics. She became concerned that Vancouver would not be able to cope with the influx of people, that the transit system would break down, that people would be put out of their homes, etc.etc.. She began hoarding her medication because she feared the medical system would be flooded with tourists and she wouldn't be able to get her prescriptions filled. For a couple of months it was all she could talk about. When she heard the bid had failed she was totally deflated.
